Havana’s corporate event capacity sits in four places: the Palacio de Convenciones, opened in 1979 on a 60,000-square-metre site in Siboney; the PABEXPO fairground beside it; the EXPOCUBA fairground south of the city, 600,000 square metres; and the protected historic buildings of Old Havana. Most planners arrive at Havana through a picture. A courtyard at dusk, a band, a long table under an arcade. Then somebody asks how many people fit, where the trucks unload, and whether the room can carry four languages at once, and the picture stops answering. So here is the inventory instead, with the numbers attached and the source named on every one of them.
What is Havana’s main purpose-built conference venue?
The Palacio de Convenciones de La Habana, opened on 28 August 1979 in the Siboney district, about eight kilometres west of the city centre. The Gobierno Provincial de La Habana gives it 60,000 square metres and 11 air-conditioned halls seating between 70 and 400 people each, around a plenary hall built for roughly 1,500.
It was designed by Antonio Quintana and built in two years for 28 million pesos, which tells you what kind of building it is: a state instrument, put up quickly because Cuba had a summit to host. The plenary has six channels of simultaneous interpretation wired in from the start. There’s a 70-metre brick mural, three restaurants, and the four-star Hotel Palco attached to the site.
That last detail is the one Cuba Luxury Rent flags first for any committee of more than sixty. The Palacio is the only venue in Havana where a meaningful block of delegate rooms is a walk from the plenary door. Every other combination in this article involves a coach, a bridge over the Almendares, and twenty-five minutes of your programme that nobody enjoys.
How many people does the plenary hall actually seat?
Sources disagree, and it’s worth knowing which one you’re being quoted. The Havana provincial government’s own page says about 1,500. Trade listings for the same room say 1,700, expandable to 2,200 seats. Cuba Luxury Rent plans on the lower figure, because it comes from the building’s public owner rather than from a sales sheet.
There’s a second reason. A plenary quoted at its absolute maximum is quoted empty – no stage, no set, no camera position, no interpretation booths in the room rather than behind it. Build a real conference into it and the usable number falls. If your headcount only works at 2,200, you don’t have a room. You have a rounding error with a lighting rig on top of it.
What does PABEXPO handle that the Palacio cannot?
Flat floor. PABEXPO is the fairground attached to the Palacio de Convenciones, on Avenida 17 in Siboney, minutes from the plenary building, and its interconnected halls take exhibition, banqueting and gala formats that fixed conference seating rules out. In February 2025 it held the closing night of the Habanos Festival.
What happened there is the best proof of scale anyone can put in front of you. Granma reported on 1 March 2025 that the festival’s closing humidor auction, staged at PABEXPO, raised a record 17.94 million euros for the Cuban health system. Seven humidors, one room, one evening. Whatever you think of the cigar trade, a venue that runs that night runs your gala.
One number Cuba Luxury Rent will not repeat: a trade directory lists PABEXPO at 60,000 square metres, which is the exact figure the Palacio de Convenciones carries next door. That looks like a copied cell, not a measurement, so it stays out of this article. Ask for the hall dimensions in writing when you contract, and get them from the operator.
How big is the EXPOCUBA fairground, really?
Six hundred thousand square metres, on the Carretera del Rocio at kilometre 3.5 in Arroyo Naranjo, roughly 25 kilometres southeast of central Havana, according to the Gobierno Provincial de La Habana. It’s Cuba’s largest exhibition site, laid out as a permanent fairground with a central pavilion and a ring of others around it.
Here’s the useful comparison. The Feria Internacional de La Habana ran at EXPOCUBA from 24 to 29 November 2025, and the Presidencia de la Republica de Cuba reported 715 companies from 52 countries, 268 of them Cuban, across more than 18,740 square metres of exhibition space. The country’s biggest trade fair used about three per cent of the site.
Which means the ground is never your constraint at EXPOCUBA. Your constraint is the distance – 25 kilometres each way, twice a day, for every delegate – and the fact that a fairground is a shell, not a finished room. You bring the finish with you. For a product launch or a dealer exhibition that’s exactly right. For a two-day leadership meeting it’s the wrong building.
Can a corporate gala be held in a historic building?
Yes, and this is where Havana outruns almost every other Caribbean city. Old Havana and its Fortification System has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1982, under criteria (iv) and (v), covering 238.7 hectares with a 412.4-hectare buffer zone. Inside that perimeter are fortresses, cloisters, palaces and five plazas.
UNESCO names the pieces itself. The Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabana, one of the largest colonial fortresses in the Americas, on the east side of the bay entrance. The Castillo de la Real Fuerza, begun in 1558. The Palacio de los Capitanes Generales on the Plaza de Armas. The Antiguo Convento de San Francisco de Asis, whose basilica has worked as a concert hall since October 1994. Plaza Vieja, Plaza de la Catedral, Plaza de San Francisco.
Those are the rooms people remember. An awards dinner in a sixteenth-century fortress with the harbour behind it does something a ballroom cannot do at any budget, and it’s the single strongest reason to bring a corporate group to Cuba rather than to Mexico or the Dominican Republic. It also comes with a landlord you have to understand.
Who controls what happens inside a protected building?
The Oficina del Historiador de La Habana, through its Plan Maestro, and the protection grade the building carries. Decreto 92/2023, the regulation of Ley 155/2022, published in Gaceta Oficial No. 84 Ordinaria of 7 September 2023, establishes five grades, I to V, and the grade governs what may be altered in a heritage building.
For an event that changes who you’re negotiating with. You are not dealing with a hotel sales office that wants the booking. You are dealing with an institution whose job is to keep the building standing for another century, and whose answer to a truss point in an eighteenth-century ceiling is often no. Cuba Luxury Rent has worked inside that system from a Havana base since 2000, and the pattern doesn’t change: the earlier the ask, the better the answer.
The practical consequence is one most international production companies get wrong on their first Havana job. In these buildings the puntal – the height between floor levels – and the structure of the floor itself decide your rigging and your headcount before any capacity chart does. You price a gala in Habana Vieja off the beam schedule, not the floor plan. Walk the room with a structural engineer before you promise anybody a hanging point.

When does Havana’s own calendar block your dates?
Two windows are worth knowing before you propose anything. Late February belongs to the Habanos Festival, which brought more than 3,300 people from 110 countries to Havana in 2025 and takes the Palacio de Convenciones, PABEXPO and the El Laguito protocol salon at the same time. Late November belongs to the Feria Internacional de La Habana.
February is the harder of the two. When 3,300 delegates land for one week, they take the venues, the five-star rooms, the good drivers and every English-speaking guide in the city with them, and a corporate group booking six weeks out lands in the middle of it. Cuba Luxury Rent steers February programmes into the first fortnight or into March, and has done for years.
November is different this year. The 42nd Feria Internacional de La Habana runs from 24 to 26 November 2026 in a mainly virtual format, with its one in-person day, the investment forum, held at the Palacio de Convenciones on 26 November – announced on 4 September 2026 by Oscar Perez-Oliva Fraga, minister of foreign trade and foreign investment. For a planner that reads as a window: the last week of November is normally the single hardest week of the Havana year, and in 2026 most of it is open. What does a hotel add that a convention centre doesn’t?
Rooms under the same roof as the meeting. For a board of twelve or an offsite of forty, a hotel meeting room takes the transfer out of the schedule entirely, and that is worth more than square metres. Below about sixty people, Cuba Luxury Rent will nearly always put a group in a hotel or a private villa rather than in a conference centre.
One check first, and it’s not optional in Havana. Verify which company actually operates the hotel on the day you contract, because the brand on the sign stopped being a reliable answer during 2025 and 2026. The third option people forget is the private house. A whole-villa buyout in Miramar or Siboney gives a twenty-person leadership group a dining room, a terrace, a pool, a cook and a gate, with nobody else in the building. For an offsite that needs to be private, it beats both the hotel and the palace.
What should a planner settle before naming a date?
Five things, in this order, and all five are answerable in a week. Get them settled and a Havana programme becomes an ordinary piece of work. Leave them open and you’ll spend the whole build re-deciding the same questions with less time each round.
- Headcount at the largest single session. This alone eliminates three of the four venue categories.
- Whether you need flat floor. Exhibition, banqueting and gala staging want PABEXPO or a heritage room; tiered seating wants the Palacio.
- How many languages run simultaneously. The Palacio was wired for six channels in 1979 and that is still the easiest room in Cuba for it.
- Where the delegates sleep, and how far that is from the general session. Every kilometre here is a line item and a mood.
- Whether any part of the programme sits inside a protected building. If it does, the Oficina del Historiador enters the conversation early or the answer arrives late.
